TURKANA: 670 km from Nairobi.
Lake Turkana is in the Northern frontier of Kenya, right on the Kenya - Ethiopia border. The sight of Lake Turkana is breath taking, as she lies amidst a vast and totally barren land. On the Lake there are 3major islands, that were once inhabited by the smallest tribe in Kenya, the El-molo. They have since moved tot eh shores of the Lake and a visit to their village gives you an insight of their way of life.
The Lake Turkana is a soda lake which is highly saline, thus the presence of thorny trees around it as opposed to thick forest belts. The Lake is home to hundreds of Crocodiles and it is fed by the River Omo, which originates from Ethopia. Conditions here are very harsh, from barren terrain right down to very hot climate, but, it is worth the visit! It is unimaginable that such barren land exists in a country that is bisected by the equator! Many a visitor jokingly brand safaris to Turkana as safaris to the moon! This is because of the huge boulders that lie across the barren land. Turkana is also known as the cradle of mankind, as many ancient fossils and paintings have been uncovered here.
