TURKANA: 670 km from Nairobi.

Lake Turkana is in the Northern frontier of Kenya, right on the Kenya - Ethiopia border. The sight of Lake Turkana is breath taking, as she lies amidst a vast and totally barren land. On the Lake there are 3 major islands, that were once inhabited by the smallest tribe in Kenya, the El-Molo. They have since moved to the shores of the Lake and a visit to their village gives you an insight to their way of life.

Lake Turkana is a soda lake which is highly saline, thus the lack of trees or thick forest belts around the lakeshore. The Lake is home to hundreds of Crocodiles and is fed by the River Omo, which originates from Ethiopia. Conditions here are very harsh, from barren terrain right down to very hot climate... but it is worth the visit!

It is unimaginable that such barren land exists in a country that is bisected by the equator! Many a visitor jokingly brand safaris to Turkana as safaris to the moon! This is because of the huge boulders that lie across the barren land. Turkana is also known as the cradle of mankind, as many ancient fossils and paintings have been uncovered here.
